Mark Whipple has a choice.

He can cry, or he can laugh. So, the University of Massachusetts football coach is trying to be "funny" his way into survival this week heading into Saturday's game with Kansas State at KSU Stadium. "I'd rather be coming to Kansas to play Prairie Dunes," he quipped earlier this week in reference to one of the Sunflower State's premier golf courses. "I'd get shots. I don't think Bill Snyder will give me any."

It was on Monday that UMass athletics director Ian McCaw was named to a similar post at Baylor University. Saying he had just received the news, Whipple said, "Maybe they will make me interim AD and I can cancel the game. I'll take the money and get ready for Maine."

For the record, UMass will receive $300,000 as a guarantee for coming to Manhattan to play the No. 6/7 ranked Wildcats. While Whipple has won 67 percent of his overall starts, he has yet to score a victory against an NCAA Division I-A team.

At UMass, the Minutemen have lost to North Carolina State (56-24, 2002), Marshall (49-20, 2001) and Toledo (24-3, 1999).
