Interview with SMU Head Coach and former Kansas State Defensive Coordinator Phil Bennett.

KStateFans.com : So Coach, how does it feel to play in a open style conference of the WAC?

COACH PHIL BENNETT: Once I get a few more players it should be easier. Right now we are not winning and it's tough. Every Week I'll tell me players to keep working at it and victory will come. We have to remain upbeat about it.

KStateFans.com : Who are your star players?

Coach Bennett: Right now we have Matt Rushbrook, 5-10, 182 lbs. who reminds me a little of Kevin Lockett as fas as his quickness goes and how he makes the Big plays for us. Also, Jonas Rutledge is also one of our beter players.

KStateFans.com : Speaking of Jonas Rutledge at 6-0, 190 lbs. Tell me about this great players who is the Soprting News Mid Season All American Pick at Kick Returner.

Coach Bennett: Jonas Rutledge is ont of our better players right now. He gives us a short field to work on when he's on special teams returning kicks as well as gives us a good cornerback whogives us great protection on passing plays.

KStateFans.com : Your 0-7 with a young team how is the media treating you right now?

Coach Bennett: It's a tough job It part of the job is to handle Media Questioning your every move with 41 of 106 players freshman and sophomores right now. They expect to win.

KStateFans.com: What are some of your favorite memories of being a coach at KSU?

Coach Bennett: The People it's like a wholesome family and the fans are really great and supportive.

KStateFans.com : Have you seen any Wacky plays since you started coaching in the WAC?

Coach Bennett: Every week you look and make sure who is legal to catch the ball and prepare your gameplan for different playing styles every week.

KStateFans.com : So who been a tough team to play against in the WAC?

Coach Bennett: Boise State has a great QB Ryan Dinwiddle, 6-1 187lbs. and great wide recievers like Lawrence Bady, 5-11, 180 lbs. They are a Top 25 team and they have played us hard.

KStateFans.com : Do any Ex-KSU players keep in contact with you?

Coach Bennett: Terrence Newman, Dyshod Cater are a few who have called me and it's great to hear from the kids that you've coached.

KStateFans.com : What do you think about the plan to move SMU to Conference USA?

Coach Bennett: I think it's a great move, it brings back our old rivalry in the SWC and it will also help with our travel expenses.

KStateFans.com : Finally coach what do you have to say about Coach Snyder and how he doing the year?

Coach Bennett: They had some injuries early this year but it looked like they got it rolling again with the win over Colorado. The Big 12 is always competitive every year but Coach Snyer always seems to get his team ready for it.

I like to Thank Coach Bennett for the interview. He got a young team but he said that give him some time and he could have a competitive team in the near future.
