Umeh Is Arizona Bound

It's not the news K-State wanted to hear when McCollins Umeh informed them he was pulling his verbal and going to Arizona instead. The news comes just a week after Umeh qualified academically and expressed his excitement to be headed to Manhattan.

He's still going to be a Wildcat. However, it's of the Arizona variety instead.

It wasn't the news Kansas State running back coach Michael Smith wanted to hear when McCollins Umeh, one of his most coveted recruits, called him last night.

"I just told him that I wasn't going to K-State after all," he said. "I don't think it went well at all. But he needs to understand that colleges do that to recruits all the time. These are my four years and I need to go where I feel comfortable and do what's best for me."

Umeh, one of the top ranked defensive ends in the nation, visited Arizona last weekend and enjoyed the trip. He said they're just a little better than K-State, when it comes to what he's looking for in a football program.

"They're rebuilding down there and have a great coaching staff in place now," said Umeh, who had committed to K-State just three weeks. "I want to be part of that. It's just something I had to do for me."

But Umeh, ranked No. 17 at his position, said he still think highly of the K-State football program, especially since KSU is the only school that actively recruited him throughout the "will he" or "won't he" qualifying dilemma Umeh faced most of the season.

"I want to thank them for going after me the way they did," he said. "They have a good team, one of the best programs in the country. It's just not the place for me."

The news of Umeh's change of heart has come as a surprise to many. Just last week Umeh had expressed serious excitement for K-State and gratitude they stuck with him throughout the season when the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners hadn't called.

"I'm ready to show everyone that didn't think I could qualify what I can do," Umeh told KStateFans last week. "I'm ready to play and everyone is going to regret not recruiting me because now they have to play against me. This is for all the Sooners and Longhorns."
