Massey Big 12 Rookie of the Week

Kansas State junior forward Jeremiah Massey was named the Big 12 Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after he averaged a team-best 22.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in helping the Wildcats to a 1-1 record last week.

The Detroit, Mich., native is the first Wildcat to earn conference Rookie of the Week honors this season and the first since current senior Frank Richards received the honor on Feb. 16, 2003.

Massey averaged a team-best 22.5 points in two games last week on 17-of-30 shooting (56.7 percent) with a team-high 8.5 rebounds in 30.0 minutes per game. He also went 11-of-13 (84.6 percent) from the free throw line.

Massey helped K-State snap a three-game skid on Feb. 4 in a decisive 78-61 win over Nebraska. He posted a career-best 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting against the Cornhuskers with five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 36 minutes. In the process, Massey helped the Wildcats shoot a season-best 62.8 percent from the field in the contest, the highest mark of the Jim Wooldridge era and the most since a 66.0 percent outing against Coastal Carolina on Dec. 6, 1997.

Massey was again impressive in the near upset of Colorado in Boulder on Saturday, as he went 9-of-18 from the field with 21 points and five rebounds in 24 minutes. He also connected on 8-of-9 free throw attempts against the Buffaloes.

Massey leads the team in six categories for the Wildcats, including scoring (13.9 ppg.), rebounding (7.7 rpg.), double-doubles (five), steals (1.2 spg.), blocks (0.6 bpg.) and free throw percentage (76.2), while he is third in field goal percentage (47.2). He has now scored in double figures in 11 games this season with 20 or more points in three of the last four. Massey is the first Wildcat to record six 20-point games in a single-season since Manny Dies did it 10 times in 1997-98.

The conference also announced that Oklahoma State's John Lucas was named the Big 12 Player of the Week.
