Lonestar Field of Dreams
Lonestar Field of Dreams

As the school year winds down, most High School Juniors are thinking of how they will spend their summer break relaxing and having fun---not so with Garrett Fields. For those recruits have been fortunate enough to have found their way onto the radar screens of numerous College Football coaches around the country, summer is another season, the off-season. This is the time that will make or break a lot of juniors around the nation as they prepare for their senior year's and try and improve their stock.
And so it is with this star LB/DE that hails from the Lonestar State and Dallas Skyline High School in the metroplex, a High School renowned for its football program and churning out top D1 football players. "Oh yea, I plan to be working out a bunch this summer, ya know. I got some work to do. I am going to be hitting it real hard. I want to get stronger and work on my speed. I might hit some more camps this summer. Right now, I'm not sure right now; I got to check with my coach."
Fields is relatively new to the Dallas Skyline program as he transferred from Dallas Lincoln High School. Having only played at Skyline for a short period of time on the Junior Varsity team due to transfer rules- it is readily apparent what type of talent this Lonestar DE possess and how serious he is about his football future: "I want to play against the best and at Skyline we play against some of the best players there is."
Here are Garrett's updated stats:
6' 3, 248 pounds, and ran a 4.8-- 40 time
Bench Press 280 pds.
Squat 450 pds.
Fields, at close to 250 pounds could play both Linebacker and DE at the next level. Asked what his preference was to play in college:"I like DE because I can get around, I can get around a Tackle with my speed and get to the Quarterback. I like to rush the edge and get to em. DE is my best spot right now." Having run a 4.8 at the Nike combine in College Station, he thinks he can improve on this time." I ran a 4.8 at the Nike camp but I think I can do better then that. I want to see if I can do better then a 4.8. I may go to the MSL camp this weekend at SMU and run."
Asked right now which schools were recruiting him and he rattled off nearly 15 schools. So we asked him instead what his favorite schools were and his top five in the order that gave them:
"Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Baylor and Tulsa."
Kansas State was the first school that Fields named and he did so without any hesitation.
"Kansas is recruiting me the hardest right now. They keep in touch with me. Yea they are recruiting me the hardest right now."
Coach Elliot is recruiting Garrett for Kansas State and in talking with Garrett; the Cats are in very good shape right now and look to land an official visit. "I am not sure all the schools I will take a visit to but Kansas State and Oklahoma State. I want to go to Kansas State and check everything out. I have to check with me coach but I want to look at them."
Asked what he liked about the Wildcats: "I like Kansas State's defense. I like their defense, they been having a really good defense for awhile now and I like that…… I like their scheme, their whole set up really. I want to play in that kind of defense and be able to go do my thing. Go make plays. Yea I like their defense a lot."
As for role models:" I like Julius Peppers and Simion Rice. I like the way they play and watching them. They make plays." Garrett was quick to point out that wherever he goes he wants to fit in and he wants to play immediately. "Oh yea, I want to play and get in there immediately, I think I can help someone but if I have to sit somewhere, I might have to but I want to play."
In talking with this recruit, I think it safe to say the Cats are in great shape here. Coach Stoops is recruiting Garrett for Arizona and might be the sleeper team at this point but Kansas State is in very good shape with this recruit.
We will check back with this Garrett as his summer progresses and recruiting continues to heat up for him.
