State's top Running Back talks Recruiting
Andre Jones Part II
by Sean Kelly
As everyone is well aware, Andre Jones has been tabbed the Best RB in the state of Kansas this year and one of the top 5 High School prospects in-state. At 6'1 and close to 180-185 pounds he bears a striking physical resemblance to another highly touted RB/CB from the state of Oklahoma- Reggie Smith who weighs in at 6'1 and 190-195 pounds.
"Yea Reggie Smith is my cousin. We talk a lot. I know that he is looking at some of the same schools I am right now. I think we kinda like some of the same schools."
At close to 190 pounds, officially Reggie Smith from Santa Fe high school in Oklahoma is being recruited as an athlete. Capable of playing a couple of different positions in college and having the size and speed combination coaches covet, many programs are looking at Reggie as a Safety. Andre clearly has some of the same qualities in that he currently plays both on offense and defense and has the size and speed that allows him to play multiple positions, but running back is the more likely position for Andre. Given this how does Andre stack up to his cousin?
"Reggie gets more attention. That's because he is in Oklahoma though. Those guys up there, man just a lot more. He gets noticed a lot but I am just as good. " Physically speaking Reggie and Andre are indeed very similar. Both are highly touted and both are being recruited heavily by many of the Big 12 schools. So who is better?
"I am. He is one of the best players…. Reggie is really good and he gets a lot of attention because of where he is. If I got as much attention, I think I would be rated higher. Definitely one of the best players but I think a lot of it is where he is at right now. If I were up there I think I would get as much as he does too. I mean he is really good, but I am better. Yea probably me."
You got to give this recruit some credit; he is not afraid of competition and certainly has the swagger and numbers to project as one of the top recruits in the Big 12 this year. I have talked to several coaches in Oklahoma this year and many think Reggie is just a special type of player. Special enough Reggie was named 2003 Oklahoma Offensive POY by The Daily Oklahoman. So I asked Andre if he was sure and could I print this.
"Yea it's ok (laughing) you can do it. I'll probably have to talk to him but it's alright….."
Having some of the same schools recruiting both players, Jones does not rule out the chance that he and Reggie could end up at the same school as a package deal.
"We have not really talked about that before, going to the same school. I have never really thought about that. I might talk to him and see."
Specifically I asked Andre about Kansas State and their chances.
I like Kansas State and I have been down there. Their fans and that stadium, they have some great fans. They are one of the top schools I am looking at."
As I said earlier, this is one of my favorite recruits already. How does this recruit figure in for the Wildcats? Well one thing is for certain, Andre Jones is not afraid to square up and play for a position and with Darren being a senior, the groundwork is laid for this recruit to come in and compete immediately for playing time at the running back spot. Past that, this is a recruit that wants to come in and play immediately and is not concerned with where the staff puts him as long as he makes the field. Injured last season, he still managed to put up good numbers and is fully qualified academically. Able to lift a small house with a 480 pound squat, I am not sure who the better prospect is right now between Reggie Smith and Andre Jones- but Andre is. Best of both worlds is they both sign with the Cats and let the fans decide for themselves
