Top Colorado Recruit Looking around
Top Colorado Recruit Looking around
by Sean Kelly
This recruiting season the Wildcat staff is looking very closely at the State of Colorado. Littleton Chatfield high school is of particular interest for the Cat coaching staff this year with potential stars like Cale Hunt and Zac Robinson- who recently garnered an official offer to play for Kansas State. Having a reputation for being able to produce highly talented running backs like star Lendale White, who elected to play for the National Champion USC Trojans, Cale Hunt is another star in waiting.
Currently at 6-2 and roughly 220 pounds with a 4.8 time in the forty and a 4.6 shuttle time, Hunt who earned second team all- conference honors as a junior last year is quickly becoming one of the Big 12's best defensive prospects.
KStateFans was able to catch up with Cale this past week and get his thoughts on recruiting. Having a former Division I player who also doubles as your defensive coordinator for a father is always helpful and this coach's son has already been spending a lot of time in the weight room this off-season.
"I'm just working on getting bigger, leaner and running. My bench is 305 and I have just been getting up there. My squat is 455 and my clean is 285 right now."
Athletic enough to go both ways and lining up for Chatfield this season at both the DE and RB position, Cale admits he would rather stay on defense and be recruited as a linebacker, preferably at the Sam linebacker position.
"I want to stay on the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker is where I want to be. Probably something like a Sam linebacker would be best for me. I am playing kinda a combo linebacker spot right now. In our defense we run a 3-4 and I have been playing like a rush linebacker position where I rush half the time and half the time I am in pass coverage."
As far as recruiting is concerned; Hunt says he is very open right now and that leaving the state is not a problem. Asked his favorite schools right now.
"CU, CSU, Idaho, Kansas, New Mexico State and Kansas State."
Coach Peterson is heading up the recruiting effort for Kansas State and recently made a trip to Littleton in May to get a good look at what Chatfield had to offer this year.
"I have been getting some letters from them. Coach Peterson actually stopped by our school last month in May….. Kansas State is definitely a team I would like to play for and am looking at but right now things are really open for me. I want to look at everyone right now."
As for camps this summer?
"I went to the CU one day camp while back and am going to go to the CSU contact camp in July."
In terms of playing time.
"I would love to play immediately but that is not important to me. If I can get in there and work a bit and learn their style of play and defense, that is what I am looking for really. Probably want to look at a red-shirt year."
So what does Cale think of the Cats defense?
"I like how Kansas State plays on defense. I have seen some of their games and get to watch them a little bit. Basically the style of defense they run. I like watching defenses, I mean we run the 3-4 defense and that would be ideal but I like their defense and could definitely see myself playing in their defense."
As for official visits this season, Cale said it really depends on how everything goes with his early visits and that that the most important factor is just feeling comfortable wherever he ultimately ends up.
"I am thinking of taking only a couple visits and if I find the right place, then I would go ahead and do it (commit). If I cannot find the right place after a couple visits then I will probably take all my visits just to see things and compare. The right thing is just to find the right fit for me. I want to feel comfortable with the coaches and their players and if I was comfortable with the stuff they are telling me about the program- then that's what I am looking at."
The question that immediately pops to mind then is what official visits Cale Hunt has scheduled?
"Nothing right now but I am looking to schedule some once our season gets going."
