Herrera Will Begin Visits In October
Herrera Will Begin Visits In October
By Kyle Lamb
There's very little stopping Abdul Herrera these days. But before he can begin his visits, there is one thing stopping that.
Taking his tests.
"I've got to take my SAT this weekend," Herrera said Tuesday night.
The 6-10 245-pounder from Miami, Fla. is the nation's 9th ranked center by the Insiders Hoops.
Last season, the South Miami Senior product averaged over 20 points a game, and has received attention from numerous of the top programs nationally.
v"I like Cincinnati, Ohio State, Illinois, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Florida, and Miami," Herrera said. "Those are the ones I can think of."
Herrera says Cincinnati, Ohio State, and Illinois are slight leaders at this moment in time. Last month, Herrera told Bucknuts.com that he was "90 percent sure" he would end up at Ohio State.
That has changed somewhat, but he continues to like the Buckeyes and now the Bearcats and Illini.
"I might stay in Florida and I might not, but I just don't know where I'm going yet," Herrera said. "It will be a tough decision, but I like those schools and I just don't want to make the wrong choice. But yeah, I am most comfortable with those three."
Despite the aforementioned three schools, it hasn't stopped teams like Kansas State from making a push for Herrera.
Kansas State has been recruiting him since the spring, and has made an impression on Herrera because of his familiarity with the coaching staff.
"I really don't know a lot about them yet," Herrera said of the Wildcats. "But I do know their coaches pretty well and they are nice to talk to. I could take a visit there, but I'm just not sure."
Herrera was still uncertain of his visits, but indicated the top three would almost definitely receive a visit.
Cincinnati was in the works of trying to get the first visit.
"Yes, their head coach (Bob Huggins) was talking to my coach about October 2nd," Herrera said in response to being asked of the possible October 2nd visit. "I may take my ACT that weekend though, so I'm not sure if I will make it."
To be on the safe side Herrera has decided he will not only take his SAT, but his ACT as well. Herrera said he is getting all A's and B's thus far in his school year.v
Ohio State has remained consistent in their recruitment, as Thad Matta and assistant coach John Groce both have kept in touch.v
"Yes, both of them have been calling me occasionally," Herrera said. "They still want me as much as anyone."
Visits to Ohio State, Cincinnati, and Illinois should all take place in October. As for Kansas State, Miami, and many other schools trying to get involved—it's in a holding pattern.
"I Just don't know what I'll do (with the remaining visits)," Herrera explained. "I guess I'll just have to wait and see."v
He cited playing a lot as the reason schools like Kansas State were still involved. The Wildcats offer an immediate chance to play for Herrera, and that's tempting to him.
"I would love to play right away, and I'm working hard to get that chance," he said.
Every day, Herrera lifts weights, runs a couple of miles, and spends hours in the gym working on his post moves. With that sort of dedication, it's unlikely he will sit very often wherever he goes.
"I can't wait," Herrera said. "I want to see these places for myself."
Once he takes his tests and his visits, there might be little stopping Herrera.
