Wildcats Open the Season Ranked 9th in Big 12

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's basketball team was picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches' poll released by the Big 12 Conference office on Thursday afternoon.

Kansas State earned 42 points in the poll, five fewer than eighth-place Nebraska and 11 more than 10th-place Colorado. Kansas and Oklahoma State were selected to finish first with each team receiving 116 points and six first-place votes. Texas was picked third, followed by Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa State and Texas Tech. Texas A&M and Baylor rounded out the poll in the 11th and 12th place, respectively. Eleven points were awarded for first-place votes, 10 for second-place votes, etc. Coaches were not allowed to vote on their own team.

Armed with a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2006-07 season, Wooldridge returns two starters and 10 lettermen for the 2004-05 season. Despite numerous injuries, Kansas State posted a 14-14 overall record and a tie for ninth place in the Big 12 Conference standings with a 6-10 mark in 2003-04. The Wildcats were close in many of those losses, as 10 of the team's 14 setbacks were by 10 points or less. Both the 14 overall wins and six league victories were the most of the Wooldridge era and the most since the 1998-99 squad.

Kansas State, which began practice on October 16, is coming off a successful exhibition tour to Vancouver, British Columbia on October 8-12. The Wildcats posted a 3-1 record with wins over Simon Fraser, Langara and Victoria to go with an overtime loss to British Columbia. Senior forward Jeremiah Massey averaged a team-best 19.7 points on 68.4 percent shooting on the tour to go with a team-leading 6.7 rebounds, while sophomore guard Fred Peete and sophomore forward Cartier Martin added 12.8 and 11.5 points per game.

The preseason All-Big 12 team will be announced on Tuesday, October 26, one day prior to the Big 12 Basketball Media Days held in Kansas City, Mo.

Kansas State will host an open scrimmage this Saturday from 12-12:30 p.m.at Bramlage Coliseum prior to the Wildcats' football game with Nebraska. Doors to the northwest entrance of Bramlage Coliseum will open at 11:45 a.m., with fans being able to watch the last 15 minutes of practice before the scrimmage. Fans will be able to register to win a basketball signed by the 2004-05 Wildcats as well as purchase tickets for the upcoming season on the concourse level.

Kansas State plays exhibition games with the EA Sports All-Stars (Nov. 3) and Pittsburg State (Nov. 11) before opening the regular season with a home game against North Dakota State on November 19 at 8:30 p.m.
