Jayhawks Head Football Coach Fined by Big 12
In addition, the Conference also assessed a $5,000 fine for Mangino's post-game remarks and put him on notice that any future such behavior will result in a more serious penalty, including a possible suspension.
"Coach Mangino's public statements called into question the integrity of the Conference and its officials," stated Commissioner Kevin Weiberg. "To insinuate that games are called unfairly so that one member institution can prevail over another is irresponsible and completely baseless.
"In weighing sanction options, I took into account that Coach Mangino immediately recognized the severity of the public comments and that he and the Kansas administration quickly issued public and private apologies. The penalty in this situation would have been more severe if not for these prompt actions."
"I am pleased that Coach Mangino immediately realized the negative impact of his comments and took the initiative to offer public and private apologies," said Kansas Athletics Director Lew Perkins. "I know he is genuinely remorseful about this entire incident. We are fortunate to have him leading our football program."
"I truly regret the comments I made," Mangino said. "It was a mistake to call into question people's integrity. I want to reiterate my apologies to the Big 12 Conference and the officials. I accept the Big 12's decision, and consider this matter closed."
Weiberg noted that coaches are an integral part of the game officials' evaluation process, which enables them to express concerns and address specific issues. Coaches are also able to submit video of calls for review to the Conference for feedback.
