QB Matt Wykes to visit Kansas State?
Conway Springs Quarterback Matt Wykes is no stranger to Kansas State football- having tripped to Kansas State's football camp this past summer as well as being a Wildcat Fan.
"Everyone that lives in Kansas knows about the tradition at Kansas State and what Coach Snyder has been able to accomplish. I have been down to campus and are familiar with everything they are doing. I went to the football camp this past summer and know some of the kids that have committed to the K-State."
As one of the best in-state talents, Wykes has seen recruiting pick up over the last month or so and although he claims a favorite right now, he also says it is a timing issue.
"Well, Kansas State is really where I would like to go to school. I really like K-State and of course they would have to be #1 one my list, I mean I want to stay in-state and Kansas State is a really good fit for me. I really like Kansas State's offense and think that I would be able to fit well within what they try to accomplish," said Wykes.
Given the timing for his recruitment and with signing rapidly approaching, Nebraska is a major player for his signature at this point as well.
"Nebraska is recruiting me as a Wide Receiver and Kansas State is recruiting me as a Quarterback. I put up almost 1,400 yards last year passing so I can throw the ball plus I have legit 4.5 or 4.6 speed and can run. Right now Nebraska has told me that they are looking at their numbers and that they would like to offer. I know they have some offers out to others kids but they have told me they are looking to find me a scholarship."
At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Wykes has shown at his career that he is capable of throwing and passing. One thing that might be hurting his recruitment to K-State is the type of offense that his team runs.
"Well I have not been able to really showcase my arm very much in the offense we run. I mean I am still able to put up good numbers but not what I could probably do in a more passing offense. (Wykes runs a wing offense)."
Coach Clements is recruiting Matt for the Cats and although a visit date has not been set, Wykes says he is in the process of trying to set a date.
"I spoek with Coach Clements about a week or so ago and I am trying to set up a visit to K-State. I know they do not have a pure quarterback in this class right now and I think I could come in and compete for a position," said Wykes.
Already fully-qualified and sporting a 3.7 GPA, Wykes is ready to go on the academic front. With Nebraska hot in pursuit, we asked Matt what would be the determining factor in his recruitment.
"Well, Kansas State is where I would like to go. I am going to give Coach Clements a call and see if I can schedule my visit to come in and just see where they are with numbers and stuff. If Nebraska offers, that would really make things more difficult as I am not sure I would not take an offer. That is probably why I need to talk with Coach Clements a bit. I mean it would be really hard not to take an scholarship offer and turn it down and living in Kansas and being a Wildcat Fan, I mean I have been down there for camp and all and would really like to go there but that might not be possible."
Were the Wildcats to offer, Wykes says there is no doubt he would commit.
"If Kansas State were to offer, I would commit right there. That is really where I would like to go and I just hope things work out that way."
