The Wildcat coaching staff almost added another commitment to the class of 2005 when Garden City (Kan.) Community College star defensive tackle Rodney Allen came within a hair yesterday of becoming the latest verbal commitment.
"Yea I really thought I had it all figured out and was going to pick today. I was going to end this and make a decision today. Right now it is between Kansas State, Iowa State and Kansas." said Allen.
Allen, who tripped to Manhattan for his official visit this past weekend, says the trip helped him identify a leader for his services and that he came about as close to committing to the Cats as a recruit can.
"My trip to Manhattan was, well it was a 10 and a 1/2 you know what I am saying? And I liked it a lot you know. It was good and I mean I just really had a good time there meeting the coaches and everything. "
In terms of where Allen sees himself fitting into the rotation and depth chart, Rodney said he had met with the K-State coaches on his visit and felt there is a spot for him to compete for immediately.
"Oh yea I have talked to them (the coaches). I have seen kinda who they have and man, I could come in and just kill stuff you know what I mean. They want me to play immediately. I am sure I can come in and try to start there," said Allen.
Many that follow recruiting closely felt that Rodney would commit to the Cats shortly after his trip to Manhattan. Allen himself admits that he was very close to committing to Kansas State yesterday.
"Well I was going to choose today. And I just changed it up cause I think I am going to take another visit. I just changed it up……I was going to commit today but I might want to do one more thing first."
That one thing is an apparent visit to in-state rival Kansas.
"Yea, I did meet with the Kansas coaches today," said the 6-foot-3 and 275 pound star defensive tackle. "Coach Bowen and (coach) Young was out here and talking to me (about Kansas)."
As for more trips, Allen says there is nothing definite and that he is trying to decide whether or not to take a trip.
"Probably, probably I will take a trip to Kansas this weekend. I am still trying to choose on what I want to do with that. I am real close to choosing and I just need to choose on if I want to take this trip to Kansas," said Allen.
In terms of his decision, Allen says he would have chosen the Wildcats today.
"Oh yea it was Kansas State. I was really close to committing to Kansas State today. Right now Kansas is kind of there but I really like Kansas State and I was going to commit today. With the other coaches (Kansas) and everything, I have to chose what I am going to do but Kansas State is my favorite right now."
In terms of a decision, Allen says he will probably take a visit to Kansas and then that will be it for recruiting and he will likely make a decision this weekend.
