Eugene Germany Down to the Wire

This time last year Eugene Germany was considered a lock for the Michigan Wolverines, only to decide with USC on Signing Day. This year, the ultra talented LB from Pomona, CA has it down to Kansas State and Michigan and his coach says it will be a Signing Day decision- but much like last year, Germany could stand the recruiting world on its ear.

Pomona, Ca. Defensive End Eugene Germany shocked the recruiting world last year when virtually everyone expected him to sign with Michigan and he spurned the Wolverines at the 11th hour to sign with the home state Trojans of USC.

"Oh yea, Eugene threw everyone for a loop last year. It is funny because this is very similar to last year where everyone thought that he was going to Michigan the night before signing day and then he picked USC. I think it shocked everyone and Eugene will do that to you ya know," Pomona assistant coach John Brown told KStateFans.

Germany who took an official visit to Kansas State this month but has been courted by Michigan since last year- has it down to the Wildcats and Wolverines heading into signing day today. Many feel that Michigan is the leader for his services although even his own coach does not know where he is leaning.

"Man, I have tried to call him a couple of times and I cannot get a hold of him. There are some rumors that someone got a hold of him today but I have not seen anything or heard anything. I cannot tell you where he is leaning," said Coach Brown laughing.

In speaking with Coach Brown in regards to Kansas State, he did have this to say about the chances for the Cats to land his talented blue chip prospect.

"I can tell you that Eugene enjoyed his visit to Kansas State and that they are right there with Michigan but again, Michigan was there like this last year too. I do know that he really likes Kansas State and that they have a very good chance at singing him but you know I would have to give Michigan the advantage to sign him right now."

Turmoil has surrounded the recruitment of Germany this year.

"Right now USC is saying that he is free to go wherever he wants but the Big 10 is telling Michigan that they need a release. Some are considering this a transfer issue while some are looking into recruiting him as a free and clear player. Tell you this, the programs that are involved here know how talented he is and will make the appeals or whatnot needed to get him on the playing field," said Coach Brown.

We spoke to a member of Germany's family late Tuesday evening and they said that Eugene will not be available for comment until after signing day and that he has plans to sign sometime after 9 am. California time.
