Feels GREAT!

Big things come in Small Packages - Waco's Midland HS RB John Hubert brings the strength, speed and top level determination that legends are made of. The Wildcat Nation welcomes the latest addition to the Kansas State backfield.

It did not take John Hubert very long to explain exactly what he was feeling about joining the Wildcat Family. "Feels GREAT!!" John Hubert's first words to KStateFans.com when we caught up to him shortly after his commitment to Coach Bill Snyder and the Kansas State Wildcats. Following an early morning meeting with Coach Snyder on Monday, John indicated they discussed the opportunity in front of him and a chance to wear Purple, be successful on the field, in the classroom and to earn a degree from Kansas State University. Coach Snyder brought him to his office to ask asked him an important question, did he want to be part of the Kansas State family? Hubert accepted..."Coach came around his desk and gave me a hug." Yup – FAMILY at Kansas State! And that is what this is, it is a story about family.

"I arrived Friday night in Kansas City and we drove up to Manhattan from there. It was pretty late when we arrived, so we just went to bed." Some might think that an inauspicious beginning to hosting a talent like John Hubert. But for Kansas State and the talented running back from Waco, it was just a prelude to what turned out to be a perfect fit for all involved.

Hosted by Brandon Banks, Hubert spent the weekend touring the facilities, getting the low-down on the academic situation and sampling the local Manhattan environment. "They're just people you want to be around. All weekend long we had a constant message about the importance of graduating. It was all football, but it was all about the importance of getting my degree as well," the star running back told KStateFans.

And Manhattan? "It reminds me of home. I'm from a small town in Texas, where everyone knows each other. So Manhattan is just like that," said Hubert.

And what of the football segment, how would Hubert fit in with the new KSU coaches and a new offensive scheme? Well, plenty of action there during the weekend as well and Hubert described how he envisioned being a part of a new era at K-State. "I watched film with Coach Ludwig. We went through plays, talked about the play book and how I fit into the offense. The offense is broad enough to where I can fit in many different situations. And we talked a lot about running the Wildcat sets and taking direct snaps from center. That's exactly what I did in high school, so I'll be real comfortable in what the coaches want to do."

During our discussion, John made special mention of Coach Snyder and the effect this legendary coach had on all the recruits. "We had a recruits meeting. Coach Snyder gave a small speech. He said things simply – We're going to change EVERYTHING here! And I need your help to do that. We're going to WIN here! And all of you are going to graduate." For Hubert, that was it, that was THE moment. "I knew right then Kansas State was the right place." Football. Winning. Graduating. And the Kansas State Family. That's how we do it here.

What's the way forward now for John Hubert? Well, in a word – WORK. "Yeah, the coaches told me to get to work right away. Get in the weight room, get stronger and get faster. The running back position is available, and it's up to me to work for it." Noting that he's currently benching 300 pounds and squatting an impressive 505, Hubert's determination to make his own mark in following another K-State legend, Darren Sproles, in the "smaller" back department is impressive. "We already talked about the things I need to do before I go to Manhattan in June. The coaches are going to send me weekly workout schedules, and I'm going to tape my sessions with my coach here for evaluation. We'll have regular sessions here at my high school, and those will be evaluated by the coaches in Manhattan, and they'll provide feedback."

An offer and a hug. Winning football. Graduating. The Kansas State Family Way. And to John Hubert and the Wildcat Nation...it "Feels GREAT!!"
