The 10 Spot With Cornelius Lucas

Kansas State's first commitment of the 2009 Class, Cornelius Lucas, looks ahead to life as a Wildcat in the first of our "10 Spot" Series with the new recruits.

Feeling a "bond with Coach Snyder" as Kansas State's first commitment of the 2009 Recruiting Class, Cornelius Lucas holds a unique place in the Return of Bill. The Edna Karr HS offensive lineman brings an easygoing, fun attitude to things. Every team needs a guy who keeps things loose, and in the latest crop of talent to sign on with the Wildcats, Cornelius Lucas – AKA "Big Sexy" - could well be that guy.

1. What about Kansas State first caught your eye?
"Overall, it was the facilities. The stadium, the weight room...everything. Oh, and the drive into Manhattan was nice, too."

2. What was your deciding factor in committing to the Wildcats?
"It was the home visit. I had just been up to Manhattan and really liked things up there. But the day after I came home, Coach Kaiser came to visit me and my family. It just showed how much they liked me to follow up that quick."

3. What are three words that describe you as a person?
"Three words? That's all I get? That's tough, you know. OK, three words...First would be OUTGOING. Second would be CREATIVE. Just the way I think about the world. I don't have any special artistic talent or anything, but I just think creatively about things. And the third would be RESPECTFUL. I have a fun time with things, but I am always respectful of people."

4. What are three words that describe you as a football player?
"OK. An easier question. TOUGH. First and foremost I am tough. Second, I think would have to be ATHLETIC. Yeah, I know...stop teasing me about looking like a tight end. I have long arms, and it's great for an OL to keep the other guy away, but my long arms make me look like a tight end or something. I'm up to 285 pounds now, but there's still room to grow. I'll be a lot bigger by the time I step on the field. And lastly, I would have to say...DURABLE. I play every down."

5. What is your favorite thing to do on the football field?
"PLAY! Seriously, I just love being on the field and the competition. As an offensive lineman, I really love to get out and block in space on screens. Pass blocking is also takes concentration."

6. What is your favorite thing to do off the field?
" favorite thing off the field is the ladies. You just have to have a good time, you know. Other than that, I like to hang out with my friends and anything to do with automobiles. I like the mechanics of cars, the engines and the technical things."

7. If you don't go on to play in the NFL, what would you like to do?
"In general, I want to be a successful young man. In all parts of my life. It's important to get my degree so I can support myself and my family, when I have one, if I am not playing on Sundays. Ideally, I'd like to get into Civil Engineering and be involved with that kind of thing."

8. What are you most looking forward to in terms of playing for Kansas State?
"Having a good time! It's FUN to play football! The visibility to the fans will be cool, as well as hopefully playing in front of NFL scouts and showing people what I can do."

9. What do you feel will be your biggest challenge in moving from high school to college?
"Athletically, it's definitely getting my body ready for the Big XII. I have to grow. I have to get stronger. I have to be bigger. It'll be a challenge, but I'm up for it. On the personal side, I have to manage my time correctly. School will be different, and the schedule for football will be different, so I have to adapt my mind and have sharper focus to keep things in the right direction. And, of course,. I have to make time for the ladies, as well."

10. Who is the one player on Kansas State's roster, or in your recruiting class, that you are most excited to be teammates with next season?
"Torell Miller is from my area. It'll be great to have someone in Manhattan who's got a similar background. And he's a good player."
