Wildcats Place Three on All-Big 12 Team

IRVING, Texas – Kansas State women's basketball placed three players on the All-Big 12 team in an announcement by the Big 12 Conference on Monday afternoon. Senior guard Shalee Lehning and junior forward Ashley Sweat were selected to the first team, while senior forward Marlies Gipson earned second team honors.

In the 13-year history of the Big 12, K-State has earned 35 citations on the All-Big 12 first, second or honorable mention teams. This is the second straight season K-State has placed at least three players on the All-Big 12 teams.

Lehning is a three-time All-Big 12 selection and a two-time All-Big 12 first team selection. The product of Sublette, Kan., is averaging 10.8 points per game, a Big 12-leading 7.7 assists per game and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. This season, Lehning has tallied a school record by a senior with 200 assists this season and is just three from tying her own single season record of 203 set last season.

Lehning, K-State's career assist leader with 771, is an All-America candidate who is being considered for a number of national honors including: the Wade Trophy, Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award, is a finalist for the Lieberman Award and is a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.

Already this season, Lehning has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team, CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII first team and to the Academic All-Big 12 first team.

Ashley Sweat earned her first career All-Big 12 honor, as she is averaging a career-high 16.5 points per game to rank fourth in the Big 12. The native of McPherson, Kan., ranks 18th in school history for career points with 1,225 and has scored the eighth-highest point total by a junior this season with 479.

This season, Sweat has garnered CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII second team honors and Academic All-Big 12 first team honors.

Marlies Gipson is a two-time All-Big 12 second team recipient and earned All-Big 12 Rookie team honors after her freshman campaign in 2006. The product of McPherson, Kan., is the K-State career blocks leader with 254 and has totaled 1,243 career points to rank 15th in school history. This season, Gipson is averaging 12.8 points per game, 6.7 rebounds per contest and 2.9 blocks per game. Her blocks total of 83 this season has set the school record for blocks in a season, breaking her own mark of 70 from last season.

This season, Gipson has earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII second team honors and Academic All-Big 12 first team honors.

Kansas State will begin play in the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championships on Thursday at 11 a.m., in the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla.
