Coach Snyder Holds Press Conference

Following a disappointing loss this past Saturady on the road to UCLA, Head Coach Bill Snyder and select Wildcat players took media questions at the weekly press conference.

Head Coach Bill Snyder On taking the season one game at a time...

"We are in a position where we need to take it one day at a time - just try to get better everyday. We are not in a position where we can look ahead to see what the rest of the season is going to look like. We are just trying to piece things together day by day."

On the play of quarterback Carson Coffman...

"The first word that comes to mind would be inconsistent, but I think that he has improved a little bit. His completion percentage has improved, which is a positive step. He is a bright young guy and he is working very hard to improve the areas of his game that need improving. He is gaining experience. I think that the more snaps that he gets, the more comfortable he will become."

On improving on weaknesses...

"I think that you have to play to your strengths. You have to put yourself in a position to utilize the skills you do have. We have to work to try to improve on the weakness that we do have. At this point in the season, we cannot make a player significantly faster or more elusive. I think it is very important to have the knowledge of what we are trying to accomplish and putting yourself in the correct position to create an opportunity to make something positive happen. "

On the inability to capitalize on opportunities...

"The first four possessions of the UCLA game we advanced the ball past the 50-yard line and came away with zero points. It is easy to point out the negatives, but so much of this game comes down to one-on-one matchups, and sometimes the opposition may be a little bit more talented. As coaches, it is our job to put our players into positive situations where we have a better chance of succeeding. I will say that I thought that we did show some improvement offensively. The first drive of the game was a good example of that. We put ourselves in good field position against a talented defense. Then to open the second half with a 14-play, 80- yard drive get our only touchdown of the game was also a positive sign. I also thought that our offensive line held their own against a very talented defensive front. Even though the number may not indicate it, we played well for three and a half quarters."

On the progression of the defense...

"I think that we are playing with a little more effort and a little more spirit. We are becoming tougher and are making fewer mistakes. We have some guys that are playing hurt and that takes a lot of courage to do that. I appreciate their effort a great deal."

On the play of the wide receivers...

"We still have a lot of work to do in that area. We have made some improvements, but we are just not where we need to be yet. I thought that the receivers did some positive things against UCLA, but they also did a lot of things that need to be corrected. I think they are making some headway, but they still have a lot of room to grow."

On the performance of running back Daniel Thomas...

"Like I have said before, he is a very talented athlete. He is a very fluid runner, but he also has the ability to be very physical runner. He has the size to compliment his ability to run the football. He can also throw the ball well, which he demonstrated on Saturday. The thing that I love about him more than anything is that he is a very humble and unassuming young man. He is a really great person to go along with how talented he is on the field."

On the senior wide receiver Brandon Banks...

"He needs to improve his game in regards to catching the ball. He has put some balls on the ground. We have to get our quarterback some protection in order to allow him to get down the field and get open. It is not all Brandon's fault. We need to try to get him the ball more frequently."

On Tennessee Tech...

"We are not in a position to take any team that we play for granted. Our approach is not who we play on Saturdays, it is how we prepare for that opponent during the week.

"With that being said, Tennessee Tech is a young football team that is very deep. They seem to play well during the latter part of the game. They are a very well coached team. Watson Brown has been around for a long time and he has them playing very well in all areas of their game. You rarely find them out of position. It seems that they are always in position to make plays. They have good team speed. They have some talented players who have put up some good numbers throughout the season."

Senior Offensive Lineman Nick Stringer On the offensive line's performance...

"We went up against a pretty good front and we did some good things for the first three quarters, but we just have to be able to finish the game."

On how the offensive line is settling in...

"I feel that the guys are getting pretty comfortable playing next to each other and knowing that the guy next to them is going to be there for him when they need him."

On team morale...

"We are a hungry team right now. We are disappointed in the way things turned out. We had high expectations going down to UCLA and we played well for the first three quarters. We are ready to get back on the field and build on the things that we learned."

Senior Defensive Lineman Jeffrey Fitzgerald On team's attitude...

"We have to come back and get ready for next week. We cannot really dwell on the past too much and just have to focus on Tennessee Tech."

On the play of the secondary...

"They stepped up and had that continuous effort throughout the whole game. As a line, we have to do better and put pressure on the quarterback. We have to be able to help each other out defensively."

Junior Quarterback Carson Coffman On how comfortable he felt at UCLA...

"Yeah I felt pretty good. I ran the ball early a couple times. I feel like that gets you into the game as you get hit a couple of times early. I felt pretty good out there for the most part."

On quarterback situation...

"I feel pretty confident at the position I am at right now. I am just trying to do the best that I can and help our team win."

Sophomore Defensive Back Tysyn Hartman On returning to Manhattan...

"It is always nice to come back and be close to our fans, especially after two road games in a row."

On team's confidence...

"I feel like we are on track still. The two non-conference losses on the road really hurt us. We are just learning from those, watching tapes and now we are trying to focus on this week."
