Wildcats Thrashing of UNLV is Historic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - It's a non-conference win, and counts no more than a single victory, but the fact is, the 95-80 thrashing of UNLV Saturday is the type of victory that puts teams in NCAA tournaments. And, it's a type of win that Kansas State has seen few of in recent history. For that reason, there's reason for celebration.

Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin is right when he says, "They don't give parades down Poyntz Avenue for wins in December."

But the fact is, the Wildcats' 95-80 taming of the UNVL Runnin' Rebels was pretty significant in the semi-grand scheme of non-conference K-State basketball victories.

In fact, it's not a stretch to call is a "historic win" when it comes to games against ranked non-conference teams played during the regular season. In other words, not including any wins in NCAA or NIT postseason play.

In the storied history of K-State basketball, it might come as a surprise that the Wildcats own just a 14-35 record against such teams, and, that mark is just 7-34 in the last 41 of those games. That's games against non-conference ranked teams in regular season play.

In the last 21 games prior to this year's victories over a pair of No. 18 ranked teams in Dayton (83-75) and UNLV (95-80), K-State had been a miserable 1-20. The win was in 2000-01 against No. 19 Iowa (86-78).

Of the 14 all-time wins, six came against Top 10 teams, which included No. 4 Long Island in 1950-51 and No. 4 North Carolina State in 1958-59, plus another over No. 5 North Carolina in 1960-61.

Seven of the wins came in Ahearn Field House and one (2000-01 vs. No. 19 Iowa) in Bramlage Coliseum. The other six came on neutral courts. Seven of the wins came when Kansas State was ranked team, and the other seven when unranked.
