Media Day - Notes and Quotes

MANHATTAN, KS. - Players Discuss the up and coming season at Media - Answering Media Questions along the way. Notes and Quotes.

Junior Offensive Lineman Clyde Aufner

On playing and being a leader on the offensive line…

"I'm going to have to get better just like everyone else, that's our main thing that we stress every day. It is the second day of camp and we are not where we need to be yet, but we are getting there. The main thing is getting better. Every time we go out there we try to be leaders, that's all we try to do."

On replacing Nick Stringer

"Well he was a great player. That is hard to replace, but we have a bunch of guys that I think can be as good."

On improving from a 6-6 record a year ago…

"Oh I think so, none of us are satisfied with that and we have a lot of guys with talent. I think as far as that we can get better. Nobody wants to be 6-6 because I think we have the capabilities to do better. We are a better team than we were last year so we need to keep on improving and see where we can go from there."

Senior Wide Receiver Aubrey Quarles

On playing with a new core of receivers…

"Yeah, it is definitely different from last year, the guys that I came in with. The junior college guys are gone and now we have a different core of receivers with transfer guys and new freshmen. It is definitely a new group of receivers but I feel that we all bond together and we are ready for this season."

On what he brings as a receiver…

"I feel that I have a great set of hands and I run good routes. I mean I am not afraid to go across the middle and catch the ball. Not that anybody was afraid, but that is something that I bring to the table."

On sophomore wide receiver Brodrick Smith

"Brodrick is a big body, a big target to throw the ball to. He has pretty nice speed and good hands as well."

On sophomore wide receiver Chris Harper

"He is really smart coming from the quarterback position. He is just an athlete out there. He is just another big body and big target to throw the ball to out there as well."

On returning only five or six catches from last season's receiving core…

"Five or six catches coming from last year, I mean, that is what happened last year, but we are all working right now. From this summer and through this camp right now we are working on getting the connections that we need with the quarterbacks and with our relationship and chemistry. I feel that we will be okay when the season comes."

Senior Running Back Daniel Thomas

On his expectations of the offense for this season…

"I think the sky is the limit for us. We have a lot of playmakers on offense so I think we can be as good as we want to be."

On the current quarterback situation…

"They (Carson Coffman, Collin Klein and Sammuel Lamur) are just battling it out right now. But with any one of those guys, I think that we can get the job done. So we are just trying to find the clear-cut number-one right now."

Junior Safety Emmanuel Lamur

On what areas the defense needs to improve on from last year…

"We need to come together. I think we just need to play together and have fun out there. We need to give everything we have got and leave nothing behind. But the whole defense has room to improve. We are a team so it is not just the defensive line or the linebackers or the secondary. We all have areas we can improve."

Junior Defensive Back Tysyn Hartman

On combating the heat…

"Drinking fluids every day. We have water bottles that we carry around, Gatorade and all types of different things. The trainers are forcing us to drink all day to keep us in the battle."

On if any younger players are standing out …

"Not really, we have a lot of guys that we can really win with, guys with the proper training and if they keep working they can really step up and help us this fall."

On his personal goals for this year…

"Really just to build on the success that I had last year. Coach Burns is a great coach and he is committed to making me a better player and really just making the secondary the best unit in the Big 12."
