Rock Chalk in Iraq

When you are packing up your gear to head off to war, what personal items do you select to accompany you? For Captain Brad Loudon, a KU flag was among the treasured items he chose to take along.

Brad is from Overland Park, Kansas and a tank commander in the 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor in the 3rd Infantry. He graduated high school from Shawnee Mission South in 92 and Graduated from KU in 1997. Loudon went on to graduate from Washburn law school.

Brad was stationed in Fort Riley before being deployed last February. He is engaged to Courtney Hoyt. His father, Byron Loudon, was at the Ribbon hanging with Chancellor Hemenway on Wednesday.

"I have known Brad since 8th grade. We grew up playing baseball, football and loving KU hoops," said Sheldon Lisandra.

The long time fan was on hand for the 2002 Final Four run, cheering the Jayhawks on in St. Louis.

"There was about four minutes left in the Stanford game and we were killing them. The mascot, that silly tree, kept dancing around. Brad was yelling 'Sit your ass down you freaking Tree!'," said Lisandra.

"It's funny because I taped the game at home and that scene was captured on tape."

This year, Brad has a few more important things to attend to.

But perhaps Lisandra can tape the game for him. And just maybe Brad's finace can present him with a National Championship t-shirt when he returns.
