(07.08.03) Malik Hairston also was outstanding. The 6-5 WG from Detroit (MI) Renaissance offered up his typically well-rounded performance. He hit threes, dunked on the break, hit mid-range jumpers and pulled down tough rebounds. He's one of the nation's best.

(06.26.03) Hairston can really score although he had a quiet camp. Hairston is a talented swing player, but we were actually more impressed with Crawford at this particular venue. Crawford appeared to be a little more aggressive than Hairston. Both are plums, and Crawford has already verballed to Michigan.

(06.04.03) The vocal scorer with an explosive first step was highly regarded prior to the spring, but now he's become the priority for a few schools, including UCLA.

(05.25.03) As much as we would like to talk about The Family's Ron Coleman, Joe Crawford and Malik Hairston independently, it's tough to separate the talented trio. The three big-timers carried The Family into the quarterfinals and came up just short of making the semis after losing a heartbreaker to the Illinois Warriors. While the 6-3 Crawford is clearly the most explosive of the bunch, each of the trio is blessed with a pretty complete offensive package. They can each drive, dunk and hit the three, and the trio combined for 179 (!) points during their three games on Saturday.

(05.24.03) Malik Hairston is a S-T-U-D. He is a year young for his class (2004) but it doesn't seem to matter because he just puts in work. He is a terrific shooter and at 6-5 he is a good sized WG who can put the ball on the deck and finish at the rim. Ohio State is probably the leader right now, but he is seriously considering KU and I think he is a top 15 caliber player. His high school teammate at Detroit Rennaisance and AAU teammage Joe Crawford is filthy as well. He is a big time athlete with more handles than a trucker on acid.

(05.03.03) The Family has been the most impressive team so far beating Team Illinois 102-59 in game one behind 27 pts from Joe Crawford, 25 pts from Malik Hairston, and 19 points from 6'8 Sophomore Brandon Wolfe. In game two the beat a very talented Compton Magic team 93-73 behined 29 points from Malik Hairston, 25 from Joe Crawford, and 14 from 6'6 Sophomore Lionell Sullivan. Crawford & Hairston both clearly outplayed 6'5 WG Aaron Affalo who gets much ink on the West Coast and has committed to UCLA.

(04.16.03) A combo forward-type last summer, Hairston has developed into a full-time wing, thanks to improved dribbling and shooting skills. He isn't as creative or explosive off the bounce as his high school teammate, Joe Crawford, but he can knock in threes consistently and has the size to score in the paint.

(03.06.03) Malik Hairston added 17 points and 10 assists against Redford Thurston

(03.01.03) This was a showdown between DePorres' scoring machine -- Brandon Cotton, who signed with Michigan State -- and Renaissance's two fine juniors -- Crawford, who has committed to Michigan, and Hairston. Renaissance made all 13 attempts from the free throw line and Hairston made four in the final 25 seconds to keep the Phoenix safely ahead. "No, I wasn't nervous," Hairston said. "You can't make them if you're nervous."

(12.14.02) Malik Hairston had 27 points and 12 rebounds against Douglass.

(12.05.02) He averaged 14 points last season and has become quicker and more agile. He can still rebound in traffic and score inside, but he has more of a perimeter game now. He often takes a backseat to teammate Joseph Crawford, but he has many outstanding qualities.
Top 100 players

(07.09.02) Loved him at the Hoop Jamboree and he's continuing to score at a good clip here. Hairston is one of those guys who can really create for himself. He's also hit you up for the quiet 20 points because he's good around the rim. Having a fine summer run.

(03.29.02) Named All-Detroit honorable mention and All-Metro honorable mention.

(02.14.02) Renaissance's lead, once 15 points, was down to six. With teammate Joseph Crawford ill, Renaissance's Malik Hairston knew he had to take matters into his own hands. "I had to come out and get the first lick," said Hairston, a 6-foot-5 sophomore. "I had to jump out and do something so they wouldn't retaliate." Hairston scored five points in a seven-point Renaissance run to begin the third quarter and the Phoenix rolled to a 60-43 victory in a Class B regional semifinal game at Warren Woods Tower
