In the News: Villanueva

The highly ranked forward is on campus today. Highlighted stories on his visit.

"I'm going to give him a shot and see how the school is. He's a good coach. He's been recruiting me a while. I really love the guy. He's a great coach."

Of course, Villanueva also loves the NBA. Villanueva, who grew up in Queens, N.Y. -- the hometown of KU assistant Norm Roberts -- has made no secret of the fact he wants to copy Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett, DeShawn Stevenson and others and bypass college completely. There's a catch, however. He has to be certain he will be a first round pick.

But it's far from clear whether Villanueva will follow Self to Kansas. Besides his flirtation with the NBA, there's a school of thought that Villanueva would remain near the East Coast should he opt for college. The reason? It's fairly clear that he would stay in school only a year or two, and he would rather spend those years playing in front of his family than playing hundreds of miles from home in the Midwest. Villanueva has scheduled unofficial visits to Connecticut and North Carolina and also is said to be interested in playing at Syracuse.
