Papapetrou enjoys official to Kansas

What makes an official visit a success? Depending upon whom is being asked, there are any number of definitions. But when describing the reaction of his senior standout - Ioannis Papapetrou - to his Sept. 24 official visit to the University of Kansas, Melbourne (FL) Florida Air Academy head coach Aubin Goporo landed on one of the most universal.

"The kid just had a good time," Goporo said, of the 6-foot-8 small forward. "He didn't even find one thing he didn't like. He enjoyed his visit."

A native of Greece in his second year at Florida Air Academy - the same school that produced former Kansas hoopster Sasha Kaun - Papapetrou was one of a small handful of top prospects to visit the Lawrence, Kan. campus during the weekend of the long-awaited 'Legends of the Phog' alumni scrimmage.

During his time at Kansas, he had the chance to watch the players play pickup ball, spend time with the team and meet with the coaching staff.

"They showed him a good time," Goporo said.

Until recently, Papapetrou has flown almost completely under the radar, but word is beginning to spread of his abilities. In addition to Kansas, he is being recruited by the likes of Alabama, Florida, George Mason and Texas.

While he was on campus, Goporo said, the Jayhawks extended an official offer - and his lead recruiter, assistant coach Joe Dooley, conducted a follow-up visit to Florida Air Academy late last week.

"They said that they like him because he's different than a lot of people they're recruiting," the coach explained. "They like his game."

Though other schools are now trying to get involved, Goporo said Papapetrou was considering only the five aforementioned schools, and visits are likely to each.

Next up? An Oct. 14 trip to Texas for their season-opening festivities.

Papapetrou is likely to decide and sign during the November signing period. Top Stories
