2014 Kansas lineman having big season

It's typically easier for opposing offenses to avoid dominant defensive linemen than, say, a similarly talented linebacker. But not in the case of Peyton Newell.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound DE/DT from Hiawatha (KS) High has racked up an impressive 60 tackles during his sophomore - yes, sophomore - campaign, including 24 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, four blocked point-after attempts, a blocked punt and five sacks.

In recent weeks, Newell has traveled regionally for a pair of unofficial visits to Kansas and Missouri, both of whom are on the long list of schools showing early interest in the versatile defensive lineman.

He attended camp at Kansas in July - one of many during the summer - and had positive things to say about the experience.

"KU went really well," he said, in a mid-summer interview with Phog.net. "I really had a connection with (defensive line) Coach (Buddy) Wyatt, and K-State also went well. Those were my two main ones I really enjoyed. I enjoyed all of them, but those two stood out to me."
