Kansas looking to shore up D-line

Those who follow the University of Kansas on the gridiron know how badly the team is in need of some help along the defensive interior - in both the short and long term. To that end, Head Coach Turner Gill and his staff are pounding the pavement in search of tackle prospects, scouring both the high school and JUCO ranks along the way. Phog.net gives Kansas fans a few names to watch.

Fredrick Walker - 6-foot-2, 320 pounds - Barnesville (GA) Lamar County High

A mountainous defensive tackle from Georgia, Walker holds offers from Central Florida, South Florida and others in addition to Kansas.

Kenneth Bishop - 6-foot-2, 300 pounds - Iowa Falls (IA) Ellsworth C.C.

The Jayhawks have been on the junior college standout for months, and the interest has been reciprocated. Bishop attended the Kansas spring game, and the Jayhawks remain in pursuit.

He's having a big sophomore campaign on the gridiron for the Panthers as well, racking up 57 tackles in eight games, including two tackles for loss and three sacks.

Chaquil Reed - 6-foot-3, 290 pounds - Butler County (KS) C.C.

Kansas has recently ramped up its interest in Reed - who played his prep ball locally at Wichita (KS) East before signing with Butler County - to the point where an offer may hit the table soon.

Reed is having an excellent season for the powerhouse Grizzlies, recording 32 total tackles in nine games, five tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He is on pace to graduate in December, and will have three years to play two.

Kevin Laudermill - 6-foot-3, 300 pounds - West Los Angeles C.C.

The Jayhawks identified Laudermill early, offering him in late July, and the big DT currently holds offers from a quartet of Division One schools - Arizona State, Hawaii, Iowa State and Kansas.

In seven games, Laudermill has 30 tackles, including three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He's also recorded three quarterback hurries.

Mike Pennel - 6-foot-5 - 330 pounds - Scottsdale (AZ) C.C.

The latest DT to receive an offer from Kansas, Pennel actually got word Oct. 30 the Jayhawks were formally throwing their hat into the ring.

They face some stiff competition for his services, as the big, athletic interior lineman is one of the most sought after prospects at his position among the JUCO ranks. Pennel currently holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, UTEP, Washington State and West Virginia in addition to Kansas.

Currently, Pennel has two visits set up - first to Arkansas (Nov. 12) and then to Texas A&M (Nov. 24).

He's justifying all the intention on the field this season as well. In eight games, Pennel has recorded 35 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
