TOC Up Close: Corey Brewer

RALEIGH, N.C. – The schools seeking the services of Corey Brewer make up a most impressive list. Now feel free to add one more – and it's a big boy. <img src="http://media.theinsiders.com/media/site_logo/premium.gif">

Kansas.

It's a Bill Self thing. The 6-7 SF from Portland (TN) High liked the guy at Illinois – and still digs the friendly Self now that he's wearing Jayhawk blue and red.

But Corey Brewer also cites Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, N.C. State, Memphis and Kentucky, and he stresses that he remains open in his recruitment.

"Wherever I can go play at," he said after his Tennessee Travelers lost to the North Carolina Gaters Saturday morning here at N.C. State's Reynolds Coliseum. "I want to contribute immediately. And I want to go somewhere that feels like home."

He could play at any of those places – but no matter what program he joins, rest assured he'll make it better.

The kid is long, lean and relentless: His game has a quiet ferocity that belies an otherwise bashful manner.

Brewer is an active swinger with the kind of rangy, explosive finishing ability that screams Super Tuesday.

The stat pack he put together on Saturday – 18 points, five rebounds and eight steals (seven of those in the first half!) – is a good indication of his consistently versatile play.

"He competes," famously combustible Travelers coach Charlie Benson said. "He's one of the hardest-working players I've ever seen.

"And I think – no, he IS one of the elite players in the country. He'll be able to play anywhere he wants."

All those schools on that list certainly seem to think so.
