Dooley to be third assistant

Bill Self finally found his man on Friday. The KU head coach named his 3rd and final full-time assistant, selecting Wyoming assistant Joe Dooley to join the Jayhawk staff.

In a release sent out by KU on Friday afternoon, Self described his excitement over the latest addition to his staff.

"I'm very excited to add Joe Dooley to our staff. I got to know him well when we had a position open at Illinois, but the timing just never worked out. I'm extremely pleased with the addition of Joe to an already-great staff of Norm Roberts, Tim Jankovich and Ben Miller. I'm confident we'll have as high a quality of a staff as anyone in America."

Dooley spent just one season in Laramie, Wyoming after previously coaching as an assistant at New Mexico ('99-'02). Dooley has also worked as a head coach at East Carolina ('95-'99).

Kevin McKinney, Sports Information Director at Wyoming, appeared on Rock Chalk Sports Talk on Friday and praised Dooley's recruiting ability.

"He certainly has an outstanding reputation as a recruiter and I think that's why Steve McClain brought him in to Wyoming. He has a lot of ties, especially on the East coast and so his recruiting prowess is very impressive."

McKinney added that Dooley's departure came as no surprise.

"He's a guy that is pretty much highly sought after, especially in that recruiting area, so I would say that we're not surprised. I does happen in this business."

Self also announced Friday that Ben Miller would still recruit for Kansas this summer and then assume the role of Director of Basketball Operations this fall. Top Stories
