Newell picks up Kansas offer

Though just a junior, Hiawatha (KS) High defensive lineman Peyton Newell has been on a tear on the recruiting trail in recent weeks, picking up a large handful of BCS offers. Friday another one came down the pipe, this time from an in-state program with which he is quite familiar - the University of Kansas.

En route to Illinois for an unofficial visit and a Nike combine event, the phone reception wasn't the best when Peyton Newell called Kansas assistant Clint Bowen on Friday afternoon, but before the call could cut out he got a bit of good news.

The Jayhawks had decided to extend the 2014 star a scholarship offer.

"I'm definitely excited," Newell said. "KU has definitely been my team growing up as a kid. Every single member of my family has attended KU. So I definitely have a big spot for KU in my heart."

Having visited the campus once since the hiring of Charlie Weis as head coach, he's already impressed with the changes he's seeing around the program.

"Just from what I've seen from visiting there once since Coach Weis has taken over it's a whole new attitude there," Newell said. "I'm definitely excited to see the change that's going to take place during the next few years."

Newell hopes to visit Kansas in the next couple of weeks around the time of their Friday Night Lights camp, though he's unsure whether or not he'll participate.

He now holds offers from Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, TCU and UCLA, with interest from a host of other BCS programs flowing in. Top Stories
