Young suffered the injury during a defensive drill at Thursday's practice. He underwent surgery Friday morning to repair the broken bone in the middle of his hand, in which a screw was inserted in the hand.
"He should be back shooting and non-contact within 10 days and hopefully back on the court within two weeks," coach Bill Self said. "I think it's a setback for Kevin and us because he's worked so hard and has been playing so well. I think this will give somebody else an opportunity to get some reps and hopefully better prepare themselves. I know Kevin will not lose any conditioning or anything."
Young is one of the most liked members of the team and was key in last year's run to the National Championship game. He averaged 3.4 points, three rebounds and 11.4 minutes per game.
The Jayhawks begin their season Tuesday night in an exhibition game with Emporia State at Allen Fieldhouse.
