Self said that freshman forward Landen Lucas would sit out Friday night's regular season opener with Southeast Missouri State, as well as Tuesday's showdown with Michigan State in Atlanta. The reason being that a redshirt possibility was something that Self and the coaching staff had been considering.
"We visited with Landon and his family about it, and they are in agreement with that. But it's not 100 percent sure because he could still play two weeks from now. But our thinking is right now, put a redshirt on him," Self said.
The other candidate for a redshirt is freshman forward Zach Peters, who has been out with a shoulder injury and is still a ways from being back in action.
"He may be feeling a little better but he's definitely still out, definitely. And you know, I'm not going to make a decision now on what we'll do with Zach. But you know, if he can't get back soon, we have no choice but to redshirt him because he'll be so far behind he won't be able to catch up," Self said.
With Lucas, Self said that it's more because of the need for experience going forward and that the redshirt could end up benefitting the Portland, Ore. native, who's future at Kansas is bright.
"It's to really replace age 23 with age 19. He'll be a much better player than he will be now. And you don't redshirt guys that you don't think can play. He does have a future here impacting our ball club."
Self did go on to say that Lucas and Peters are the only players being considered for a redshirt in 2012-13.
