Omar Wilkes' summer vacation

It's been a great summer for Omar Wilkes, but as the future KU freshman said on Thursday, the good times will really get rolling this fall. <img src="http://media.theinsiders.com/media/site_logo/premium.gif">

While Wilkes will admit to doing a little bit of beach bumming this summer back home in California, he's also kept busy working out with a Los Angeles Lakers strength coach.

Wilkes said another summer highlight was his trip to Lawrence in June for summer school and pickup games during the two weeks of youth basketball camps at KU. He especially enjoyed hanging with his fellow freshmen, JR Giddens, Jeremy Case, Nick Bahe and David Padgett.

"Those guys are great. I really enjoyed hanging with them. It was excellent. JR is hilarious. I had a great time with him. Jeremy's cool, and Nick's really funny too. Obviously, I've known Dave for a while so he was no surprise. It was great getting to know all those guys."

Away from the five on five action, Omar and JR had time for a little one on one game and both walked away impressed with one another.

"It was pretty fun. It would have been fun to watch as a spectator. It started off with us just going easy, and then we got impressed with each other's skills and we started going hard. It was a lot of fun."

Omar also has enjoyed getting to know the coaching staff a little better and agrees with JR Giddens claim that Bill Self is cool enough to be one of their "homies".

"He's definitely one of the homies. I mean he's obviously going to be our coach and he's going to discipline us, but if all things were considered we could definitely see him being homies with us.

I can only say great things about him and staff. I'm so excited. I really look forward to playing for them. I love Coach Self and the staff. We definitely got the best coach possible."

As every college student does in August, Omar will soon be decorating his new dorm room. When asked if he'd have any special basketball memorabilia on the walls or any inspirational pieces, Omar insisted he'd have the room decked out with plenty of inspiration.

"My inspiration will definitely be Beyoncé, Beyoncé, Beyoncé. Basketball takes up every other hour of the day. I figure when I go to my dorm I gotta see something that makes me smile. She's the most beautiful woman in the world and my future wife!"

Omar plans to return to Lawrence on August 15th and as you can tell, KU is not only getting a very talented guard in Wilkes, the program is also receiving a very colorful character.
