After a slow start, Kansas turned on the defense and unleasehed senior forward Perry Ellis, as the Jayhawks advanced to the Elite Eight for the 21st time in school history in a 79-63 win over Maryland, Thursday night.
Kansas will meet Villanova, Saturday night to decide who goes to the Final Four in Houston.
“Tonight, I thought we played just superb,” head coach Bill Self said. “I thought the second half, we defended, we rebounded. We ran good offense for the most part and, of course, our two bigs played very, very well.
Ellis scored 27 points to lead Kansas, while Wayne Selden added 19 points. Forward Landen Lucas may have been the unsung hero with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while providing tough defense that helped change the course of the game.
“He's such a smart player,” Ellis said. “He knows his position and he just does a great job. He just makes so many different plays, rebounding and just awesome player.”
