Jayhawks on a winning streak

Both the volleyball and soccer teams earn victories in opening games.

If Caroline Smith was really good as a Kansas University soccer freshman, then she's really, really good now. Smith scored three goals and had an assist for a school-record seven points as KU clipped Northwestern, 4-1, in its season opener Friday evening at SuperTarget Field.

The Kansas University volleyball team started the 2003 season solidly, defeating Western Kentucky, 3-0, Friday in the first day of the Best Western Inns and Suites Invitational. Playing without injured sophomore setter Andi Rozum and junior libero Jill Dorsey, who was injured during practice before the match, the Jayhawks (1-0) won 30-25, 30-27, 30-25 for their sixth consecutive season-opening victory.
