Northwest (Wichita, Kansas) High School offensive guard Joey Gilbertson went to a KU Friday Night Lights Camp in late June with an offer and left impressed enough to commit shortly after.
“I went up there for a Friday Night Lights camp. The facilities were great and the coaching staff is great,” Gilbertson said. “Coach (David) Beaty is something else. Coach (Zach) Yenser is a high-tempo guy, which I love. It was mostly the coaching staff.”
He was strikingly impressed with what he learned in that short time one-on-one with offensive line coach Yenser.
“When I camped, he coached me the entire time, which was great,” Gilbertson said. “I’m going to enjoy playing after him. I learned a lot.”
Gilbertson hasn’t taken an official visit yet, but plans to get back to Lawrence soon.
At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, he believes he can work to make an immediate impact for the Jayhawks.
“Hopefully I can get up there and make a big impact,” Gilbertson said. “Nobody really wants to sit out a year. I’m going to do everything I can to make the field.”
He feels his aggressiveness sets him apart.
“Just being mean and trying to dominate your opponent,” Gilbertson said.
He said he wants to work on his footwork and pass protection technique before getting on campus.
He sported offers from Tulane, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Southeast Missouri before picking Kansas.
“The Big 12 is a great conference. It’s really up there,” Gilbertson said. “I’m really happy to be playing in it. I love football. I’m a football guy and have been for 10 or 11 years. I’m not going to give up when it gets tough.”
