Kansas Football Class of 2017 Signee: OL Joey Gilbertson

Phog.net takes a closer look at the newest Kansas signee.

Recruiting

Joey Gilbertson's only Power 5 conference offer came from the Jayhawks, but sported offers from Tulane and South Dakota State. He was impressed with the facilities and coaching staff following a Friday Night Lights camp and decided to commit shortly after.

Quotable

Gilbertson: “The Big 12 is a great conference. It’s really up there. I’m really happy to be playing in it. I love football. I’m a football guy and have been for 10 or 11 years. I’m not going to give up when it gets tough.”

Evaluation

Gilbertson is a bone-crushing bully who often makes pass rushers look silly in their feeble attempts to get past his blocks. He's solid at holding the block to allow running backs to get past the line of scrimmage and has solid footwork. Generally speaking, the closer you are to the ball, the more likely a redshirt becomes, and it's likely the staff will want him to get bigger and stronger. It wouldn't surprise to see Gilbertson pop on the two-deep quickly in years two and three on the roster.
