Women's schedule released

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Kansas women's basketball schedule, which includes four tournaments during the non-conference season and a powerful Big 12 schedule, was released by head coach Marian Washington and school officials on Tuesday.

The Jayhawks, who will face eight teams that reached postseason play a year ago, open the season with two exhibition contests. KU welcomes Sparta Praha, a foreign team set up through Basketball Travelers, to the Fieldhouse on Nov. 10, before playing host to St. Louis Goldstar on Nov. 16.

The regular season gets underway on the road on Nov. 21 when Kansas travels to Kansas City, Mo., to face the UMKC Kangaroos. KU has won its last four season-openers and is 14-5 under Washington in season-openers played away from Lawrence.

Four tournaments and two home games make up the rest of the non-conference slate. Kansas will host the annual Jayhawk Classic, Dec. 6-7, with Cal State Fullerton, UTEP and Alabama State rounding out the four team field. The Jayhawks will travel to tournaments at Oregon on Nov. 28-29, Denver on Dec. 20-21 and Dartmouth on Dec. 29-30. KU will play home non-conference games against Ball State on Dec. 13 and San Diego on Jan. 3.

Big 12 Conference action kicks off for the Jayhawks on Jan. 7 when the reigning league champion Texas Longhorns come to Lawrence. Kansas will play home-and-home series against each of the North Division teams, while playing each South Division team once, hosting Texas, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, and traveling to Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. Two KU games will be featured on Fox Sports Net this season, including the home matchup with Missouri on Jan. 24 and the contest against Oklahoma on Feb. 14.

The eighth Big 12 Conference Tournament will take place for the second straight year in Dallas, Texas. The tournament will take place Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, March 9-11 and 13, at Reunion Arena.

"We're excited and looking forward to this season and the schedule we have," head coach Marian Washington said. "We wanted to achieve some balance with our pre-conference schedule and I think we have a schedule that should provide us with that. Building confidence is something that is going to be important early on and we have tried to put ourselves in a position where we are able to compete, where we are able to learn, where we're challenged but able to develop some confidence. Each and every game we need to be working toward preparing for the Big 12 and this schedule should help us be able to do that."
