Smith named Player of the Year finalist

LAWRENCE, Kan. - University of Kansas soccer player Caroline Smith has been named one of 12 finalists for Soccer Buzz Magazine's 2003 Women's Soccer Player of the Year, the publication announced Thursday.

"It is certainly a great honor," Smith said. "I think our entire team has helped put me in this position. I am thankful of this honor."

Awarded annually since 1996, the 2003 winners will be the eighth recipients recognized by the online magazine devoted exclusively to women's collegiate soccer. Soccer Buzz plans to announce both the Player Of The Year award winner and the Freshman Of The Year award winner in December after a vote of every D-1 women's soccer head coach and the publication's staff.

Smith, a native of Edina, Minn., has shattered her own single-season scoring record with a total of 19 in 2003. She is also KU's career leader in points (68) and goals (31). Earlier this month she was honored as one of 15 semifinalists of the 2003 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Award. No. 16 Kansas will look to move one step further in the NCAA tournament, Friday, Nov. 21, when it takes on the 2nd-ranked UCLA Bruins. Sweet 16 match time at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif., is set for 7 p.m. PST (9 p.m. CST) Top Stories
