SoccerBuzz honors Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- University of Kansas soccer head coach Mark Francis, junior keeper Meghan Miller, sophomore forward Caroline Smith and freshman defender Holly Gault were honored by SoccerBuzz magazine Friday.

Francis, who led the team to its best-ever record at Kansas, 18-6-1, and a berth in the Sweet 16, was the Central Region's Coach of the Year runner-up to Colorado's Bill Hempen.

Miller, who ranks and Kansas' all-time leader in goals-against average was selected to the All-Central Region second team.

Gault, who was a member of the All-Big 12 Freshman team, was a third team All-Central Region selection as well as a member of the Region's freshman team.

Smith, who broke the KU single-season goals record and ranks first all-time in goals scored at KU, was placed on the All-Central Region's first team.

"I think these awards are a great reflection of the progress we have witnessed in our program," Francis added. "I am very pleased with these ladies and I know all of their teammates are very happy about these honors as well."

The Jayhawks, ranked 11th in SoccerBuzz's final poll, capped their season with a run to the 2003 Sweet 16, falling to the UCLA Bruins, 1-0 in Los Angeles, Calif. (1/31/04) Top Stories
