Brouce Mompremier: What Happened?

Brian Hanni catches up with Brouce Mompremier to find out why South Florida landed him on Signing Day.

Brouce Mompremier had another change of heart late Tuesday evening.

A simple one word answer to the question on every Kansas fans' mind: Why did Mompremier change his mind the day before he supposed to sign a letter of intent to play at KU?

"I had no problem with leaving Florida.  But that's a very long way."

A week ago, the Miami, FL talent had visions of Crimson and Blue and playing linebacker for the University of Kansas.  He was high on the ‘Hawks after visiting Lawrence on the weekend of January 24 th .

At that time, Mompremier was so excited to be a Jayhawk, that distance didn't matter.  He knew he'd have to move away from home eventually if he wanted to fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL someday. A chance to play in the Big 12 conference was exactly what he thought he needed to take his game all the way to the pros.

A week later, the glamour and exposure that comes with being a star in the Big 12 Conference was starting to lose it's luster in Mompremier's mind.  The most difficult decision of his life was due on Wednesday and he was starting to realize what a distance he'd have to travel if he committed to spend his next four seasons on the gridirons of the Midwest.

Late Tuesday night the distance-factor was just too much.  In the final hours before signing day, this three-star prospect ran a double reverse, electing to honor his initial verbal commitment and sign with South Florida.  USF was elated and Kansas was left out in the cold.

Losing a player of Mompremier's caliber is never fun, and it really hurts when the runner-up has to call the player to hear the bad news.

"They were disappointed that I didn't contact them," said Mompremier on Wednesday after KU had to call him to hear the news. "The distance was just too much." Top Stories
