Micah Downs: Best visit to date

Bill Self has been a busy man over the past couple of weeks. He has been checking in with 2004 and 2005 recruits from New Jersey all the way to Alaska. Self and Assistant Coach Joe Dooley were in the state of Washington on Thursday, shooting the breeze with 2005 prospect Micah Downs.

Downs is a 6'7" wing player from Bothell, Washington who currently has the Jayhawks at the top of his list.

"Kansas is probably my favorite right now. The prestige they have, along with how the are in the tourney, and the tradition are all great. Also, they have good coaches and good players," said Downs.

KU has stepped up to the plate by already offering the blue chip recruit. Downs will be in Lawrence on the weekend of May 14th for an official visit.

Thursday's in-school visit on April 29th went smoothly, Downs and the Kansas coaches met for approximately two hours.

"It went great, they're good guys," said Downs in regards to Self and Dooley.

Good guys who made quite an impression on the 2005 target.

"It was probably my best visit to date. The stuff he told me stood out. He wants to build a relationship inside and outside of basketball. Coach Self wants my family and his family to be friends. Not just while I'm at Kansas, but afterwards as well. He wants to help me become a better player and a better person."

Other schools currently in the hunt for Downs include Texas, Michigan State, Gonzaga, UCLA, Utah, Washington, and Washington State.

Phog.net spoke with Downs just before the wing player's in-school visits with the Longhorns and MSU which were scheduled to take place on Friday afternoon. Downs has already gotten together with coaches from the rest of the schools interested. He stated that the Kansas and Gonzaga visits stuck out as the best visits, in that order.

Apparently, Coach Self feels Downs can come in and make some noise as a freshmen.

"Coach Self thinks I am the type of player who could play right a way or maybe even start. He told me that I'm the kind of caliber of player who could do big things at a University like Kansas," said Downs.
