“We just finished school, pretty much today. I’m looking forward to just focusing on basketball.”
Tyler Smith is a member of “Southeast Elite”, an AAU club that will be heading to the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions later this month. After that, a busy summer of hoops will be well underway, but things have already been hectic for this five-star talent.
Lately, Smith has been so busy winding down school and playing ball that he hasn’t had a chance to keep an eye on any recruiting news. He said he hadn’t heard of the recent commitments Kansas has been landing, but did add that he’s still a fan of the Jayhawks.
“I still have high hopes for Kansas, because I like Coach (Bill) Self and Coach (Joe) Dooley.”
Apparently the duo made quite an impression on Smith last month when visiting him at school. Smith walked away from that meeting excited to visit Allen Fieldhouse for “Late Night in the Phog” this fall – a trip he’s still looking forward to taking.
While some recruits might head into on-campus visits with a head full of curiosities, Smith says right now all of his questions have been answered.
“Coach Self pretty much answered everything we had when he came down here. We might have some more questions in fall, but he really did a good job of laying it out when he was here.”
Now it’s Smith’s turn to layout which schools he likes the most. It’s a chore he and his father initially hoped to have done this spring but ultimately decided to put off until the fall.
“We had hoped to have one done, a top five or top ten, but then my dad and I decided to wait and do that in the fall. I’m just still wide open.”
And apparently he’ll stay that way through the summer. Smith does have a list of other schools he thinks he’d like to visit though.
When Smith finally gets around to trimming his list and taking visits, he’s looking for a good fit and great relationships to help him make up his mind.
“I just want to go to a place where I feel like I fit in, where I’ve got a good relationship with the coach, the players and assistants. Academics are important too. That’s pretty much what I’m looking for.”
As good as Smith is, he’s got plenty of options and should have no problem finding his criteria with one of his many suitors.
