Tyler Smith Heads to Colorado

As Smith makes his way to Colorado to participate in the USA Basketball Men's Youth Development Festival, Kansas and Tennessee still appear to be Smith's frontrunners. However, some new schools are making a push for Tyler's services.

It’s already been a productive summer for Tyler Smith and the 6-6 SF from Pulaski, TN hopes this week’s trip to Colorado Springs is another step in the right direction.

Smith will be taking part in the USA Basketball Men's Youth Development Festival as a member of the South team.  Smith left for Colorado on Wednesday and his father, Billy Smith, said his son is very excited about the weekend ahead.

“He left today and we talked on the way to the airport and he was excited to give it all he’s got and see if he can move up in the rankings.”

A raise in Smith’s status as The Insiders’ No. 21 overall prospect might be in line if he continues to make the kind of steady progress that the elder Smith says his son is making.

“He’s having a good summer.  He’s really been working hard on his jump shot from the outside, and that 10-12 foot jumper.  He’s also been working hard defensively.”

Plenty of schools are taking note of Smith’s potential.  In fact, Billy Smith said his son has seen several new schools really turn up the heat in recent weeks.  A pair of schools from Florida has shown greater interest of late, but it appears Kansas and Tennessee are still the frontrunners for Smith’s services.

“(Kansas and Tennessee) are still his favorites, but also Miami has come on strong in the last two or three weeks and Florida State has come on strong.  There have been more colleges that have come in contact with him.”

Smith’s father also pointed at Alabama and USC as being two other legitimate contenders who appear to be very interested in his son.  Tyler is happy to see more and more interest pouring in but his father says he tries to keep his son away from a lot of the recruiting hype.

“Sure he’s pleased, but I’m the type that doesn’t let him get caught up in all of that.  I’ll let him know who sending him mail and calling but I try not to let him get too wrapped up in that stuff.”

Billy Smith wants to see his son go out and prove his worth to himself, rather than listening to every school tell him how good he is.

“I just want him to go out there and play and show people you can play.  Then you can make up your mind.  Everybody can tell you you’re good when they want you.  But if you go out and prove yourself then you can make up your own mind.”

Tyler will look to prove himself further this week in Colorado Springs and try to build some momentum for a busy month of July.  Billy Smith will be traveling with his son throughout the summer and this traveling tandem will cover a lot of ground over the next month.

“We’re going to go to the Adidas camp in Suwanee, Georgia and then at the end of July we’re going to Las Vegas and Los Angeles.”

Not too long after those trips, the Smith’s plan to make their way to Lawrence for a visit in the fall. Tyler and his dad having been planning to visit Kansas for “Late Night in the Phog” in October and Billy says that trip is still on for now.

“So far, we’re still looking forward to that.”
