KU Soccer: Chasing a Championship

KU soccer can wrap up its first-ever Big 12 title Friday at home.

The Kansas soccer team will attempt to capture its first-ever Big 12 Conference championship at 3 p.m. Friday when it takes on Iowa State on Senior Day at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

The No. 7-ranked Jayhawks (15-3 overall, 7-2 Big 12) will honor seniors Monica Brothers, Amy Geha, Rachel Gilfillan, Gabby Quiggle, Meghan Miller, Stacy Leeper and Lauren Williams before the game and then get down to business against the Cyclones (7-10, 4-5).

Iowa State has given the league's top teams all they could handle this season, but KU has been almost perfect at home during the past four years. Even more, KU has rebounded nicely from its three losses this season -- all by 1-0 margins.

Among the notable points for the seniors:

  • Brothers ranks fourth in KU history in career points and goals.
  • Gilfillan is second in career points, goals, game-winning goals and fifth in assists.
  • Williams, a two-time captain, is seventh in assists.
  • Geha ranks tird in career assists at KU with 16 -- just three off the all-time lead.
  • Leeper is one of the best defenders in Kansas history.
  • Quiggle has been KU's most valuable reserve.
  • Miller is KU's all-time leader in shutouts, goals-against-average, games played and career starts. Following Friday's contest, the Jayhawks will take the weekend off and then prepare for the Big 12 Conference tournament at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Tex., and then head to their third NCAA Tournament.
