"Pat has played a major role in rebuilding the KU football program," KU head football coach Mark Mangino said. "We're excited for him as he starts his new challenge. He'll still have a big impact on our program in this new position."
Henderson, a 1975 KU graduate and former defensive end under legendary Jayhawk coach Don Fambrough, is a native of Kansas City. He returned to his alma mater in 2002 after spending a pair of seasons as the special teams coordinator/secondary coach at SMU. He also served stints with Arizona State, Purdue, TCU and Tulsa.
At Kansas, Henderson worked with the Kansas secondary before spending the last two years coaching the Jayhawk running backs. Henderson guided the efforts of Jayhawk running backs Clark Green and John Randle, who were both named honorable-mention All-Big 12 in 2004.
Plans for Henderson's replacement on the football staff have not been finalized.
