Bill Self fielded questions at a series of December alumni luncheons, including speculations on series-the-fans-want-to-see.

"There was talk regarding Duke, but my understanding is that s not going to work out," stated Self.

How about taking on an in-state school? What is stopping Kansas from playing Wichita State Shockers?

"," said Self with a grin. "That is not going to happen any time soon. They are too good right now."

"I told Mark Turgeon (WSU Head Coach), ‘Look, if you come in and upset us – which they could do – then everyone will say they should have hired you instead of me,'" quipped Self. "No way I can risk that," said Self shaking his head emphatically.

Hmm, well what about a North Carolina match up then?

"There are plenty of Kansas fans that want to see that," acknowledged Self. "And there are plenty of Illinois fans that want to play Kansas. You don't see as many Kansas or North Carolina fans looking the other way."

"Fans are not the only ones who want that match up. I don't think it is a good idea though. Maybe eventually, when Roy has all his own guys and I have all my own guys. But right now? I wouldn't support that. Not North Carolina and not even Illinois." said Self.

Which is not to say the Jayhawks and the Tar Heels – or the Jayhawks and the Fighting Illini -- won't face off this season.

"Sure, it is possible," smiled Self. "With the NCAA Tournament, anything is possible." Top Stories
