Sunday Jayhawk Pickup Game Report

Micah Downs has arrived on campus, and he's having an impact on the battles taking place in pickup ball. More on Downs and other Sunday night standouts inside.

Red shirt players and soon to be freshmen dominated last night’s Jayhawk scrimmages.

Rodrick Stewart and Jeremy Case looked like seasoned guards while Julian Wright and Micah Downs showed off their low post moves.

The most impressive showing of the night came from Wright, an incoming freshman forward, who scored from all over the court. He got some ohs and ahs when he threw down a left handed tomahawk dunk, but contributed most with his shooting.  When his team was forced into half court sets he continually hit un-defendable fade away jumpers and three point shots.

Downs also looked good from the outside, as he hit a few threes of his own. He even nailed a game winner with a defender in his face.

At the point guard position, Case showed his potential by barking orders and putting on a ball-handling clinic. No one could steal the ball from him, and once he got room he drilled a number of threes – some from NBA range.

The most athletic player on the court was Stewart, a transfer guard. He continually beat defenders to the basket, and dunked the ball harder than most of the big men. He also made some nice touch passes in the transition game.

Note – Russell Robinson played with a bandage wrap around his right wrist. It didn’t slow him down, though, as he made good passes and converted several fast break lay-ups. Top Stories
