The 6-9 Donte Greene is a versatile big man whose current recruiting situation resembles an old fashioned ACC-Big East battle.
“My list includes UCONN, Syracuse, Georgetown, Maryland, Clemson, Florida State, and I believe North Carolina” said Greene. He also told Phog.net that all the teams on his list have fielded offers with the exception of North Carolina.
The Towson Catholic standout told us that the only interest he’s received from the Jayhawks was one letter.
“I’ve gotten one letter from Kansas and I’ve talked to my coach a couple of times about it but that’s it.”
UCONN may have the upper hand in his recruitment because of fellow Maryland native, and current Husky forward Rudy Gay. When I inquired about his relationship with the UCONN star Greene’s smile got wider as he proclaimed, “That’s my man!”
“He (Rudy) tells me it’s a good school and Coach Calhoun will work you, but he will make you better. He will push you a lot,” Greene continued. “He’ll push the buttons that he has to and make sure you want to make it at the next level…that you’ll succeed and go to the next level.”
Greene is one of many recruits who admit Calhoun’s long history of producing talent that’s NBA-ready goes a long way in impacting the recruiting process.
Before I could finish asking Greene if he was taking any unofficial visits he jumped right in with “UCONN”, and flashed that wide grin again.
“I’m going to be calling Rudy when he gets back up to campus and follow him around for day” said the Maryland star.
I asked Greene what role he saw himself playing at Connecticut and he responded with a chuckle and this statement -- “I’ll slide right in there when Rudy leaves and take his old position (laughs).” Then Donte added a little more seriously, “I just want to make it to college first…that’s the first thing. Then from there just play hard and do what I gotta do to make it to the next level.”
As for Donte’s teammate Malcolm Delaney, he has a similar list of ACC and Big East candidates.
When asked about recent contact with Kansas Malcolm stated “I’ve gotten a lot of mail lately.” But that was about it on the Jayhawks.
The 6-3 point guard answered emphatically when asked why he likes the Huskies.
“Guard play,” said Malcolm. “I like how their big men run the floor. I like running. I don’t like settling down; I like UCONN’s style of ball.”
Though he’s already taken an unofficial to Maryland, and NC State, the scoring guard hasn’t thought about taking any more visits just yet but that’s definitely on the horizon.
So with two highly-touted recruits who play for the same AAU team and play on the same high school squad, it begs the question --- would Malcolm and Donte think about attending the same school?
Malcolm’s response was “I like playing with Donte. If you push him he’ll give you everything you ask that’s why I like playing with him. I’d look forward to going to the same school as Donte.”
Donte answered with “We do all the time”. “First it was North Carolina State but UCONN is pushing real hard right now. UCONN might be the one.”
