The Jayhawks pulled away in the second half behind a 24-2 run that helped seal the victory. Five Jayhawks finished in double-figures and KU forced 28 Gorilla turnovers, which resulted in 36 Jayhawk points.
Senior center Crystal Kemp led all scorers with 24 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Kemp scored 14 of the Jayhawks' first 16 points to open the second half. She also finished with three rebounds and three assists.
The game also saw the debut of several new Jayhawks to the lineup. Junior guard Shaquina Mosley finished with 13 points and four assists, seven of which came in the first half. Freshman guard Ivana Catic was also impressive in her Kansas debut, finishing with six points, six assists, and five steals. Additionally, freshman guard Sophronia Sallard chipped in 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half.
In the first half, senior guard Kaylee Brown's 12 points paced the Jayhawks to a 40-32 halftime lead. The Arcadia, Okla., native scored the Jayhawk's first five points and helped Kansas open the game on a 14-1 run. Sophomore forward Taylor McIntosh snagged four rebounds in the opening half to lead the Jayhawks.
The second half saw the Jayhawks employ an aggressive full-court defense that pressured the Gorillas into numerous turnovers. Senior guard Erica Hallman scored nine of her 13 points in the second half. Sophomore forward Jamie Boyd grabbed five of her team-high seven rebounds in the second half.
The Jayhawks next game will be on Sunday, Nov. 13, against the Emporia State Hornets. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
Promotions for the game include "Sadie Hawkins" day, where one paid admission will get one free ticket and "Scout Day", where scout troops will receive $2 single game tickets. In addition, the game will feature a youth basketball scrimmage at half time.
