Jayhawks Land Kansas City Lineman

Kansas is off to a very good start in 2006-07 recruiting season. Christian Ballard pledged the Jayhawks in late February and now Mark Mangino has added big Donald Stephenson to the Kansas recruiting class. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound, offensive lineman from Kansas City (Mo.) Central says KU was the perfect fit and he's ready to make his mark in Lawrence.

"I had scholarship offers from Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State and Wisconsin was getting ready to offer me." Donald Stephenson said.

"Kansas just seemed like the perfect school for me. I'm very close to my family and it was important to me that they are able to see me play."

Central High School isn't a powerhouse program in the Kansas City area and head coach, Major Gene Bresino, said his prized recruit is self made.

"I can't say enough about Donaldt," Major Bresino said. "People don't come to watch us. They come to watch Dwight solely because he's a great player. Dwight is the kind of young man that you seek out to have on your team.

"I brought Donald up to the varsity as a freshman and he started both ways for us as a freshman, sophomore and this past year. He's our team leader. Kansas has been on him since he was a sophomore and I think he just felt comfortable with them.

"Donald is the kind of guy that will lay it all on the line for his team. He works hard and plays with a fire in his belly. No matter what goes on during a game, Dwight will get fired up and that will spark his teammates to follow his lead.

"Donald also comes from a very supportive family and that's very important. He's just a great leader. If he takes with him what he's learned here with us and transfers that to Kansas, he's going to be a very good player."

Stephenson was named all-league as a junior. He carries a 3.5 GPA in the classroom and told Scout.com that he plans on camping with Kansas this summer.
