Releford Makes His Choice

Just a week ago, Travis Releford planned on waiting until at least the end of July before making a decision. But, like so many teenagers do, the 17 year old had a change of heart. After spending the weekend in Portland taking part in the Adidas Nations program, the six-foot-five inch shooting guard decided to end his recruitment and he won't be going far from home.

Thanks to an early Tuesday evening phone call to Bill Self, the Kansas City native will be a Kansas Jayhawk.

“I’m going to KU,” said Releford “ I’m committing, that’s where I want to go.”

A senior to be at nearby Bishop Miege high school in Johnson County, Releford has been a frequent visitor to Lawrence since drawing a scholarship offer from Self almost two years ago. While overtures from schools like Missouri, Texas, North Carolina, Kansas State and Oklahoma were considered, Releford couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stay close to home.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot this past weekend,” Releford told Phog.Net. “KU has been around since day one and at first I was going to keep my options. Big colleges have been calling me and whatever but it just seems like KU wanted me a lot more than anybody else.

“Ever since my first day of high school they’ve been coming to my practices, going to my games and calling to check on me. I didn’t see any reason to keep waiting.”

As excited as Releford is to get his decision out of the way, there’s another member of his family who may be even more excited. His mother Venita Vann had long ago made it clear to her son that she hoped he’d end up in Lawrence and he was happy to give her the news.

“She’s happy about it, that’s always where she’s wanted me to go,” said Releford. “She’s going to be excited to be at my first game and is excited to come to all of them.”

Smooth and patient on the court, Releford is a polished wing player who loves to attack the basket. He’s an excellent passer, tough defender, rebounds his position very well and is hard at work making his jumper a weapon. He says that Kansas fans can expect a versatile performer.

“I’m going to give them my all, every time I step on the floor,” said Releford of his game. “I don’t even know what to tell them to expect, just hopefully another great basketball player walking in to make history. That’s what I hope they can expect. “

The first member of what is sure to be a sizeable recruiting class, Releford is happy to get things rolling for the Jayhawks class of 2008 recruiting efforts. He’s looking forward to playing with a clear mind and there’s a couple of guys that he hopes to persuade into joining him in Lawrence.

“I think Coach Self has got it under control and he’ll be able to handle it,” said Releford. “I’ve talked to DeAndre (Liggins) from Indiana Elite telling him that KU is where it is, just joking around and stuff.”
